The Treasons Cycle

The Treasons Cycle is a hard science fiction series set amidst the sprawling interstellar war between the Lunan Empire, and The Republic of Syndon. It's a war that has lasted for generations, and taken untold millions of lives.

The cycle follows the life of York Ballin. Born into the Lunan Empire, a penniless foster child, York is raised by his unloving foster parents Maja and Tollem Zoa. Living hand-to-mouth on the streets of the backwater agro planet Dumark, at the age of twelve a couple of older boys persuade York to help them in a crime. But they bungle it, and the courts give York a choice: life at hard labor on a prison mining asteroid, or enlist in the navy of The Lunan Empire.

Author's Note:
A Choice of Treasons, the 2nd book in this series, was written first as a stand-alone novel and originally published in 2012. Of Treasons Born, the 1st book in the series, was written in 2015 as a prequel. As such, both books stand-alone, and can be read in any order. The author is considering a 3rd book in the series titled By Treason Forged. Chronologically, it will occur after Of Treasons Born and before A Choice of Treasons, so it will be a 'tween book, or, the new 2nd book in the series. Are you as confused as I am?

The author recommends you read the books in the order in which he wrote them:

  1. A Choice of Treasons
  2. Of Treasons Born

To save himself, he first had to save two empires...but when he tried, his options were limited to a choice of treasons.

As a lifer in the Imperial Navy, fighting in a war that has lasted for generations, York Ballin’s only hope at an honorable discharge is the grave. Matters only get worse when the emperor's daughter, princess Aeya, decides to do a little slumming with her entourage on a remote planet, and York and his fellow crewmen are forced to rescue her. But after returning her safely into the empress' care on the planet Dumark, the entire planet is hit by a massive Directorate assault. To evacuate the empress along with the rest of the imperial embassy, York is ordered to commandeer the imperial cruiser Cinesstar, which is crewless and undergoing repairs in the Dumark Navy Yard. And after a narrow escape York finds himself deep behind enemy lines, on a commandeered imperial cruiser without a trained crew, commanded by an incompetent nobleman, with the empress and 200 civilians as passengers, and the enemy, the Directorate, pulling out all stops to destroy them. But, from a strategic or military standpoint, the assault on Dumark was an unwarranted waste of the Directorate's resources, and it becomes clear the empress, and a member of Aeya's entourage, are carrying a dangerous secret, so dangerous it threatens the power structures of both the Empire and the Directorate, so even their own comrades in the empire want them eliminated. And with everyone now hell-bent on turning Cinesstar and all those aboard her into a cloud of radioactive vapor, it falls to York to save them all. But he must choose between saving them, or saving himself, and he finds his options are limited to a choice of treasons.

Of Treasons Born

Reviews

“Of Treasons Born” is an excellent military SF novel, part Hornblower, part Wiggins. It had me from the first page and held on for the rest of them.”—Kevin J. Anderson, New York Times bestselling author of The Dark Between the Stars.

There is no honor in treason, but sometimes only treason can satisfy honor.

In A Choice of Treasons York Ballin is a lifer in the Imperial Navy, fighting in a war that has lasted for generations, and his only hope at an honorable discharge is the grave. But what were the events that led up to York's reluctant enlistment? What spawned York's almost fanatic loyalty to his friends, and his doubts regarding the imperial uniform he once wore with such pride? This novel, a prequel to A Choice of Treasons, sheds light on the early life of the complex character who is the hero of this series.
